The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) invited recently experts from their several User Groups to join their new thematic Virtual Communities (VC) for collaboration. Berggren’s experts Paula Sailas and Paula de Andrés Gómez, representing the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI), have been appointed to EUIPO Virtual Communities 2025 working groups, where they will help refine trademark and design law practices across Europe.

    • Paula Sailas is participating and representing FICPI in the trademark’s classification and CP16 new common EU practice working groups, which focus on trademark classification standards and harmonization.
    • Paula de Andrés Gómez, also representing FICPI, is a member of the quality working group, dedicated to promoting a harmonized, efficient, and reliable EU IP system.

    Why is this important?

EUIPO’s policies directly influence how businesses secure and enforce their IP rights across Europe. These working groups contribute to the development of:

    • Criteria for approving or rejecting trademark applications.
    • Consistency in the interpretation of regulations across different national IP offices.
    • Best practices to help businesses strengthen and protect their IP assets more effectively.

Bringing practical expertise into policy discussions

Berggren’s experts contribute a practitioner’s perspective, ensuring that IP regulations remain clear, predictable, and aligned with the needs of businesses. Their participation helps bridge the gap between legal frameworks and practical application.

Engagement at the global level through FICPI

Beyond their work with EUIPO, Paula Sailas and Paula de Andrés Gómez are also active in working groups within FICPI (Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Intellectuelle), a global organization representing private-sector patent and trademark attorneys. FICPI facilitates dialogue between IP professionals, policymakers, and IP offices, ensuring that practical expertise is considered in the development of international IP policies.

By taking part in these initiatives, Berggren’s experts contribute to the continuous improvement of IP systems, supporting innovation and business growth.
